The 5 Things No One Told You About Going Out in College...

Going out in college sounds awesome doesn’t it? Who doesn’t want super cute insta pics and wild memories of the time you danced on that table? You finally made it to freshmen year and you are so pumped about being away from your curfews and questions from parents. This is all you baby! Nothing but time stands in your way now as you wait for 10pm to come and the party to begin. Wrong. Wrong, just totally wrong. I’m not saying wild nights are a myth in college, I’m just saying you’ll most likely find them in the last place you thought to look. Take it from me, there are plenty of things no one ever told you about going out in college… here are 5.
  1. You won’t be out by 10. End of story. You won’t! One roommate will not be able to shower when she wants, so she’s thrown off and taking forever. Next thing you know your closest disappears into one shirt and no pants and you arrive at the conclusion there is simply nothing to wear. Then, the person you’ve been texting with the address to the party suddenly stops answering. “But he was just texting me!” I know, but now he isn’t, and you won’t be out the door till 11:30 at best.
  2. It will always be further than “one block away.” Seriously it’s never just one block away. It will always be at least a 10 minute walk, on a good night if you are able to herd your friends like cattle in a straight line with no one stopping. If you are brave enough to bare the party scene in the dead of winter… Good luck! Looking cute doesn’t seem so important when you’ve lost your legs to hypothermia. The walk back will seem 10X longer.. And it will be because you’ll probably get lost or lose a few friends along the way.
  3. You will be packed inside a small house and possibly overheat. See the tricky part is dressing warm for the walk… But not so warm that you pass out mid dougie on the dance floor. Just like you found out about the party? Yeah so did 100 other students who have been on the same journey as you. Everyone is dancing off 30 pounds of sweat. Stick 100 kids in a basement and you could generate a school with all the heat. Let’s just say, you’ll never leave the party looking as good as when you got there.
  4. You’ll have to be in charge once every cycle. Oh you’ve never heard about the cycle? It’s how many friends you have, that’s the amount in a cycle. Once every cycle you’ll have to be in charge of what seem like 2nd grade children at Chucky Cheese. Don’t let her hook up with him! Where the heck is Ashely?! Wait who has the key to the dorm! No Megan that is not a good idea! Yup. Being in charge of everyone is great!
  5. The best nights you’ll have are unexpected. You’ll plan your Halloween costume all October and your “ABC” outfit for three weeks, but those nights won’t ever compare to the random nights you didn’t even know were happening. You’ll be bored in your room alone when all of a sudden someone comes in and says “I’m bored too.” There you go. The perfect recipe for what have turned out to be my favorite memories of college so far.  It could be at a party, but more times than not the fun memories happen outside of a Frat house. They’ll happen when the story begins with “so this one random night…”
There you have it. The 5 things no one ever told you about going out in college. The best of times are the ones you never saw coming.
I tricked you all by posting, yet another, not fashion related post but this was something I wrote a few months ago, and after seeing all the back to school posts, I was inspired to find this again and post it on here. This blog is about embracing your story, so there is more to me than fashion, thus, I'm willing to post whatever inspires me, which most of the time is fashion anyway!
Thank you for reading, until next time...

The Awful Dreaded T Word

My personal take on transferring: the good, the bad, and the totally truthful. My first hand experience on the very dreaded T word...

We are allowed to change our hair, our favorite color, our favorite flavor of ice cream.... so why is it so frowned upon to change one of the single biggest decisions of our lives? I remember feeling like, by transferring, I was failing. Why? Why would I feel that if I'm still getting my degree, still taking classes, and still preparing myself for my future, I'm failing and disappointing everyone.

It's the confusing concept society has created to ensure we look as perfect as possible. We aren't able to make mistakes. But we are humans, and frankly, humans often make mistakes. I forget to ask for room on my Starbucks coffee almost every time I order. Sometimes, I go to grab my car key instead of the house key to unlock the house door. It happens. Sometimes, you are too busy thinking about how badly you want to get inside you forget to check and make sure you are using the right key. In a weird way, that's sort of like choosing a college. See, senior year is a blur of confusing emotions and the feeling of needing it all figured out. Some people have it, they've known forever and it would have a better chance of snowing in July in Southern California than their plans going differently, but others, the majority... just don't know. For me at least, college always seemed so far away, like something I could keep putting off but eventually it was right around the corner and I needed to make my decision. I was so excited about moving out of Delaware, I forgot to check and see if I was using the right path to do so. I think that's how it is for a lot of people. I was moving so fast, I forgot to check the key I was using. You are forced to make this life altering decision when you aren't even old enough to legally drink. We are supposed to be trusted with a hundred thousand dollar life investment? And if we get it wrong, we are shunned for choosing wrong the first time? What about what's behind door number 2? Sometimes, door number one isn't always what we thought it was, but the grand thing about college is... We can transfer! What?! Am I actually claiming it's okay to transfer?! Yes... I am. Because it is. It's OKAY to get it wrong the first time.

The real tragedy is the fear that it's not okay, that's when you are really truly failing yourself. When you continue to fill your life with unsuccessful, toxic choices. If you don't love it at the school you swore you would, don't force yourself to stay in order to prove some hypothetical point we have to always be perfect. Take it from me, I was thrown right on my ass when I tried to force it. For anyone reading this saying, "transferring isn't a big deal, no one cares" I have a feeling these people haven't seen the looks on others faces when you admit you are transferring. I'm sorry to admit it folks, but your poker face isn't as bulletproof as you thought and as soon as I muttered the words, "I'm transferring" I saw the initial disappoint in your face. I get it! Trust me, I do, it's not your fault. We automatically assume everyone makes the right choice, and it's disappointing to watch someone openly admit they changed their minds. Unfortunately, I saw this at the highest degree because to others, I was just another failed attempt at a girl trying to escape a small state, and falling victim to missing home. On the outside, I'm sure that's what it looks like, to be honest I would probably assume the same if it wasn't me, but here we are, you are reading this blog, and I am me, so I can't see it that way. I don't owe anyone an explanation, but I will say this, I'm doing what's best for me. To quote the great Jason Derolo, "Finally doing me and it feels so right." So, transferring isn't about failing and getting it wrong, it's about trying again and getting it right. It's okay to transfer, as long as you believe you are happy... that's all that matters (sorry for the cliche, it just fits so nicely.)

So that was it people. My long winded rant, but partly helpful words, as to why transferring shouldn't be the most dreaded T word we know. Turtlenecks should be. Anyway, for anyone reading this who did transfer, or knows someone who is, trust they know what they are doing and try not to place judgment, people don't always get it right.

Thanks for reading, hopefully you enjoyed it. More blogs on fashion and the better things in life, like home decor and DIY's are soon to come.

Bedroom Tour and Update!

Oh hi, I didn't see you there. Oh wait, no you haven't seen me here.. since its my blog.. I know, I know, I've taken a rather larger hiatus from blogging but its all in good reason. Writing is my creative escape, so naturally I write best when I'm stressed. My mind is like a free-for-all of crazy anxious thinking, so putting the words on paper makes them tangible... and understandable. So lucky for you, or maybe not so lucky if you accidentally clicked on this link only to realize its just me rambling, I am back in school for my sophomore year of college, thats a weird sentence, and filled with stress already! Yay!

Since its back to school time, I figured a new tour of my bedroom would be the perfect first post back in what I hope to be, a consistent blog. Recently home decor has become a slightly unhealthy obsession for me... like when I say obsession, I mean I qualify to have a TLC special about me.  I get this adrenaline rush when I buy decorative pillows, and if I know anything about science, which I don't, that doesn't seem like a healthy reaction. Don't people get adrenaline rushes when someone is in danger and they have to lift up a car? Or if someone just won the lottery? Oh well... lets just pretend its totally normal. I recently moved into the only renovated apartment in my schools building, I'm so lucky maybe I should play the lottery and feel a real adrenaline rush. Anyway, it's so cute and brand new and I couldn't wait to get my hands on decorating it, also luckily enough, my roommates entrusted me the duty of decorating, an honor in which I took very seriously! A full apartment tour may be making its way on here very soon! Until then, hopefully a bedroom tour will suffice.

I have been slowly collecting items over the course of summer, and some of these items are DIY, even my pillows! I know, I know, I'm the better looking Martha Stewart without the prison, and without all the money... which is most of the reason I had to make my own pillows in the first place.. anyway that is not important. What is important is how much you like my room! If you would like any more details on the DIY message me on either this blog or Facebook and let me know!

So this is the first view you get from entering the door into my bedroom. My colors are essentially Gold and Black, with small highlights of color in my pillows to add texture and life to the room! For housekeeping purposes, the big black square that is very hard to see is my ottoman! Ive made it my little seat for putting on my shoes, since you can see they are all displayed underneath the bed! #Fashionstudentproblems

This is a more detailed shot of my gallery wall, which I think will rival the birth of my first child for one of my proudest moments because I love this thing!

(In order from left to right):
Small Black Picture Frame - Marshals
Small Circular White Mirror - Christmas Tree Shop
Gold Flower Canvas - DIY ALERT! This was made with stencils found at Michaels and gold spray paint.. literally could it be any easier!
"Happiness" Clear Framed Quote - Francesca's
"Girl Boss" Canvas - DIY ALERT this was just black paint, a reference picture on google, and a boring Saturday night to make this
Gold Rhino Head - World's Greatest purchase bought at Marshal's
Small Black Picture Frame - Marshal's
Four Square Vintage Photo - Christmas Tree Shop

P.S: Spot Olaf hiding behind my pillows, what a stud!

This is a storage bookshelf I found on Groupon for about 25 dollars, but I've seen these everywhere lately! They are really trendy because of their open structure, it's my favorite piece in my room.

I filled it with mostly picture frames, plus one awesome little globe I found at a store called Tuesday Mornings!

Lastly, are my prized possessions, my pillows! I adore these things. So we'll start from the back left.

Gold Geometric - Target
Green, Blue, Dark Pink, and Tan Pillow - DIY!
Black and White pom pillow - Marshal's
Dark Pink - DIY
Grey - DIY

Yes, I made three pillows for under 30 dollars! Whereas, my gold geometric one costs around $23... plus I could totally customize them to my room! I was a little worried about their durability, but they have held up three after class naps so far. I remove them at night, but otherwise they hold up so well!

I'm thinking a DIY week is well overdue so definitely keep your eye out for one in the next few weeks!

Next post will be up tomorrow! It's on my thoughts on the dreaded T word... transferring. It's a little rant, but hopefully it can enlighten a few minds!

Thanks for reading, welcome back to the blog! Until next time!

Gym Face Must Haves

It's happened everybody... the day has arrived... I honestly never thought it would come to this... I pictured it feeling different... my time has come, I officially have... writers block.

It hit me 2 weeks back, I had plenty of useful blog ideas, and frankly I still do. But none of them were fully prepared, and slowly but surely I fell off my writers streak.

It's been dark and lonely without you all here with me, the "non-blogging" world is rather horrifying. I think we need a name for people who live like that, sorta like the muggles in Harry Potter. Maybe those unfortunate folks who don't read or write blogs could be called.... loggers? Loser bloggers? Yeah maybe not... it's a work in progress...

To jumpstart my writers blog and get back into the world of talking to the internet where people may and or may not, probably not, care about what you say, I've been spending every day in the gym. Generally, I love the gym. I really do, but I can fall off my routine every once in awhile... but I must say, these past few consistent weeks of going to the gym regularly have me feeling more energized and a little less stressed for bikini season... which trust me I'm still stressed about.

Nonetheless, I'm in college, which simply means I go to my college's gym.. full of college boys.. and college sports teams.. and very intimidating, or gym-timidating (blogger joke, please laugh) groups of people. Any real skin care lover knows you shouldn't wear makeup to the gym because it clogs all your pores when you sweat and causes impurities to build up underneath the skin. But any girl knows sometimes... we need a little confidence to roll up in the free weights and hang with the boys, no shame there.

So I have put together my Gym Face Must Haves for anyone looking to just add a little coverage to their face, but still keep it airy and natural looking!

In order of application:

Face Lotion: Cetaphil - this stuff is AH-MAY-zing for moisturizing dry skin and giving your face a  healthy glow.

L'Oreal True Match Foundation N5 Natural Beige - This is my every day foundation, which is build-able coverage... but what I'm about to share with you makes it the perfect wearable gym makeup!
  • MIX 1 part lotion, of any kind, and 1 part foundation in your hands. Rub them together like you do sunscreen, so the two parts mix! The foundation will become less pigmented, but you will still get coverage and the lotion adds the moisture to keep it looking natural! Its a homemade tinted moisturizer! I love this combo for gym days because it gives me small color and coverage, while also feeling light on my skin to sweat through!

ELF Concealer Apricot Biege - Literally this stuff is $1... and I love it! It has very very light coverage, but adds color and brightness underneath your eyes. I have under eye circles, so I need some brightness and this does the job of covering them up... but still looking like I have no makeup!

L'Oreal Telescopic Mascara - I just adore this mascara.. that's all...

Mario Badescu Facial Spray with Rose Water - this spray feels so fresh on your face and really gives a natural and dewey glow that goes perfectly with your gym look
  • Spray the facial spray on your face and you are ready to go

This face is my Go-To look and I hope you all try it out and love it too!

Hopefully, no more reckless writers block ensues.. Thanks for reading, until next time!

Skin Care Week

If you haven't noticed, I take skin care very very seriously. You can have the best outfit in the world, rock the hottest shoes, but if you lack confidence because your skin isn't under control... your perfect outfit is ruined.

I understand finding the perfect skin care product is a tedious and horrible process.. but it is worth it. In hopes of speeding up the process, here a few extra tips for overall healthy skin without using products!

Drink Water Drink Water Drink Water!

Drinking water is probably the best thing for your skin, and your overall health! The more water you drink the more glowing your skin will look and it will have a noticeable effect, I promise. Adding lemon or mint leafs into your water is an easy way to make it taste better, get a few more added nutrients, and also look super cool because you have fancy things in your water unlike those... regular people who drink regular water.

Use another face towel!

This tip may be basic for some of you... but others may never have even thought about it. When you wash your face at night, and hopefully in the morning, when you dry your face is it on the same towel you dry your hands? If so... STOP! Hand towels have so much dirt, bacteria and germs on them that you probably have never thought about it... and don't want to think about again after this post. All I ask is that you use a separate towel to dry your face at night!

PAT don't rub!

Weird title I understand... but it will make sense it a minute. After you dry your face with your own separate face towel... please don't rub your face dry. Rubbing on your skin to dry it, just as you would to dry your hands, only pulls at the skin on your face. The skin on our face is so sensitive that the constant pulling from 'rubbing' your face dry can cause irritation and the dreaded w-word no one wants to hear.... wrinkles! Pat your face dry and all the redness you see after your wash your face will slowly disappear!

Regularly Wash your Pillow Cases

This may be another tip some may say is super simple, but others may have never thought about it. Your pillow cases hold all the sweat (gross), oil and bacteria from your face and hair every night so if you go more than 2 weeks without throwing it in the wash... you are risking your skin to have oil and dirt build up.

Lastly, love your skin!

I know there are a billion and one things you can complain about on your face. Example, I hate how oily my skin gets, how my skin pigmentation makes any foundation look orange, and that I break out around my mouth every other day... but I've learned to embrace it. Just as much as this skin annoys me, it is the very one thing that sets me apart from others. Love your skin! It's yours and it makes you YOU! This blog is all about embracing your story... so learning how to embrace your skin in apart of the journey!

Now for the Skin Care Secret you will fall in love with!

This is my Lemon and Sugar Magical Facial

Ingredients: Lemon, lemon juice they sell in the bottle works just as well, cotton ball, sugar (hopefully organic, but any kind will do)

- First step is to take off you makeup if you are wearing any, and wash your face with warm water, warm water opens up your pores and helps your skin to purge out all the impurities!

- Next, squeeze the lemon, or pour the lemon juice onto the cotton ball. The lemon helps erase blackheads, corrects discoloration, can diminish scaring and fills you face with healthy nutrients.

- Pour sugar onto the cotton ball, it will stick to the lemon juice, and then start scrubbing this on your face! The sugar acts as an exfoliant to scrub away dead skin!

- It may feel harsh at first, but it will slowly start to calm down and you will be giving your face the most magical gift ever.

- Once you have scrubbed your face, wash away the sugar with warm water, pat you face dry and enjoy the results. Use twice a week or anytime you need a little pickup!

Your face will feel SO soft you will turn into a crazy person and make everyone feel it... I should have added that disclaimer in the beginning..
This scrub will give your face a gorgeous glow and it will make it feel insanely smooth. Use this before a night out and glow for all the pictures you better take!

The Start Of Skin Care Week!

Skin care routines are the "checking your bank account" of overall hygiene. NO ONE wants to ever take the time or effort to implement a skin care regimen into their day... but I'm sorry folks it is literally the most important part of your day! It is the only skin you will ever have, I hope because if not, that's weird, so you need to take the best care of it possible.

There are quite a lot of myths and 'fake rules' regarding skin care. I am no esthetician, but I am a blogger and we hold quite a lot of authority in this world. I have dedicated probably 32 days worth of youtube hours learning about various skin care lines, routines, products, and tips that I have found to be the most successful.

Disclaimer: Everyone's skin is different so the first step in finding the perfect skin care line for you is to identify your skin type! I have oily/combination skin so most of my tips will be in that favor. It is Skin Care Week, so my post this Thursday will have a face Scrub I adore, and a few tips for overall healthy skin!

If you need help identifying your skin type, I found this quiz online that helps zero in on your skin type. https://www.reneerouleau.com/quizzes/1/questions/1#.VMe1Uoc-BAZ

The first part of your skin care routine, is taking off your makeup!

Trust me, I know you hate the feeling of being ready for bed and then remembering to drag yourself to the bathroom to wash your face. But the least you can do in a situation like that is take off your makeup! They invented makeup wipes for a reason! My favorite is the Olay Fresh Effects Wipes, because they don't feel too harsh and strip away the oils on my face. Neutrogena also has their makeup removing wipes that are extremely popular and work well for a lot of people, but they tend to leave my face very oily and I usually break out after using them.

Makeup sitting on your skin seeps into your pores and causes oil and bacteria to build up overnight, which causes acne and blackheads. To avoid all those horrible things... take your makeup off!

The second part of my skin care line is a gentle exfoliant

Even though you may think you took all your makeup off... you didn't. Plain and simple. Makeup gradually sets into your skin throughout the day, so it won't all come off with a makeup wipe! A gentle exfoliant will work into your skin to take off the dead skin and the rest of your makeup. My favorite product for this is the Olay Fresh Effects "Out of This Swirled" Deep pore cleanser!

This cleanser feels so fresh on my skin, hint "fresh effects," and I love the gentle beads that exfoliate! Another favorite I switch to often is the St. Ives Apricot scrub. Both of these products help to ensure all the dirt and makeup is off my skin.

Next, a cleanser

Once all products are off your face, this is where you can begin to target acne, redness, or any other impurities on your face! I don't usually break out, so a product I like to use to generally cleanse and treat my skin is the Ulta product Philosophy "Purity." This cleanser feels so refreshing on my skin and it prevents breakouts before they even start!

If you suffer from acne, and want a harsh treatment to counter the breakouts, try using products with Salicylic Acid. Some websites say to stay away from this harsh chemical, but whenever I have a breakout, I turn to this to purge the breakouts and push out all the bacteria.

Mario Badescu is my FAVORITE skin care line, even though it falls on the higher end side of products. This line also has a really effective Enzyme Cleanser. That is a really good all over cleanser.

Look for products that treat your problem areas. Rule of Thumb: Look for products with as many recognizable ingredients as you can. Treating your skin with chemicals and acids you have never heard of can only irritate your skin even more. The more natural and organic ingredients, the better chance you have treating problem areas.

The most important part of your skincare is a Toner!

If you do anything skin care wise, please, please tone your skin! Every time you don't tone your skin, a blogger feels the pain.

Toning corrects the balance in you skin. Our skin is naturally acidic, and after all the products we put on our skin a day, it effects the PH balance of our skin. Toners help to restore the PH balance, treat acne, and overall cure our skin.

A harsh but extremely effective toner is Neutrogena Acne Stress Control toner. I admit, this product  burns the first, second, and hundredth time you use it, but I have never found another toner that restores the balance of oils and combats redness like this one.

For a less harsh treatment, Mario Badescu has a Glycolic Acid Toner that works just as well! This is a toner for more sensitive skin and it restores redness and helps cleanse your skin.

Lastly, MOISTURIZE!

After all the work you have done to clean and purify your skin, you have to help it restore over night!
Leaving your skin dry will only cause it to produce oil to make up for the dehydration. Your skin will always overwork itself and produce too much oil causing breakouts and oily skin.

My all time favorite moisturizer is the Mario Badescu Seaweed night cream! This feels amazing on my skin and really works to penetrate my skin and keep it healthy. Ensure the moisturizer you use is a Night Cream. These moisturizers usually have certain ingredients that seep into your skin overnight, rather than coat and protect your skin like most other daily creams. Oil Free moisturizers are really important for night time, because they don't use "fake" oils, they use the right ingredients to naturally moisture your skin.

I know I have blogged your ear off... or eyes off since you can't hear me... but regardless, skin care is SOO important. Important enough that I dedicated this week to be named Skin Care week!

Stay tuned for Thursday, my post will be my tips to keep your skin healthy, aside from your daily routine and one of my favorite sugar scrubs I use twice a week for glowing healthy skin!

Let's Do Leather!

As we all face the rough winter ahead, and the countless snow days we will soon endure... it is definitely time for a little surprise here on my blog to make your day inside a little more fun!

While I was in California I met one of my favorite people on this planet. I met this little gem the first day of orientation and from then, we have shared experiences and stories I'm lucky to be a part of. It also helps she's an east coast girl like me (where all the best girls are from)! She has such an eye for fashion and a killer style so I am so excited that today.... we are doing a collab post!!

Yes, yes everyone, you are lucky enough, today, this one time only (except, actually not, because I love working with Ashleigh) you get two looks from two separate bloggers!

We both styled a leather jacket, since it is a signature in Ash's closet and an exciting edgy piece for me, but we put our own looks to show different ways to style the jacket.

I decided to style my jacket in a casual look, but with a touch of edgy. This is a simple outfit, but when you add the leather jacket... it instantly becomes date night or girls night ready!

These shoes may be my favorite part of this outfit! These loafers are such a fun texture and print. With a plain outfit, the shoes are a really interesting piece to add something to pull the look together.

Scarf: Forever 21
Shirt: American Apparel
Jeans: Forever 21
Leather Jacket: Forever 21
Glasses: Urban Outfitters
Shoes: Lalia Rose

Ash decided to take the look straight to edgy! Don't be afraid to take chances, you are wearing a leather jacket.. you are already pretty much as badass as it gets.

I love what she did with the turtleneck, it is different but compliments the look so well!

She is a fellow blogger, so if you love this look be sure to check her out! Visit her blog for outfit details!!

Hope you enjoyed this fun little collab post! I will definitely be pairing up with her again! Let us know if there is something else you want us to style! Grab your leather jackets and style your little heart out!
